The origins of Go Ape can be traced back to an adventurous trip through France. While travelling with their six-month-old daughter, Rebecca and Tristram Mayhew came across families swinging through the trees in an outdoor adventure park.
The teenagers were having fun, but so were the parents, and this sight sparked an idea. Recognising the potential for a similar experience in the United Kingdom, they decided to take a leap of faith.
Leaving behind their corporate careers, they took a bold risk by selling everything they owned, borrowing money, and dedicating themselves entirely to their new vision. Without a financial safety net, their success depended entirely on making Go Ape work.
Friends and family were divided in their opinions, some thought they were making a mistake, while others believed they would regret not taking the chance.
Tristram, a former soldier, had been trained in high-risk decision-making and was determined to bring the adventure to life.
His military experience helped him take calculated risks, while Rebecca’s business acumen ensured the company’s growth. Their perseverance paid off, and in 2002, they launched the first Go Ape location in Thetford Forest.
Over the past two decades, Go Ape has expanded to 37 locations across the United Kingdom, welcoming more than 10 million visitors. The company has maintained its adventurous spirit, continuously evolving and setting new goals to bring even more excitement to its customers.
